Is Social Media the Right Place to Find Help With a Service?

Searching for help with general services like Simple Errands, Tasks and/or Projects on Social Media can come with it’s own subset of problems and risks. While some have success, others have run into the wall with the known risks. At Gopher, we’ve identified these problems and risks and continue to build the platform in a way that solves for them. Below is some information to compare and contrast the differences.

Facebook

  • Neighborhood/Community Groups – People often ask for help with errands, moving, lawn care, or deliveries in local buy/sell/trade or “What’s Happening In [City]” groups.
  • Marketplace (informal) – Sometimes people post requests for odd jobs or errands alongside buying/selling posts.

⚠️ Downside: Quality control is low — you don’t always know who’s responding, and there are frequent scam/spam risks.

Nextdoor

  • Hyperlocal by design — neighbors post about needing someone to walk dogs, pick up groceries, mow lawns, etc.
  • Has a built-in “recommendations” feature for local helpers or businesses (paid and unpaid)

⚠️ Downside: Not everyone in a neighborhood is active, and reviews can be manufactured.

Craigslist

  • Not social media in the traditional sense, but many still post under “Gigs” or “Labor” for errands, moving help, or one-off tasks.

⚠️ Downside: Very high scam potential, zero verification.

Reddit

  • Subreddits like r/AskNYC, r/LosAngeles, r/[YourCity] often have people asking for help with errands, moving, or tasks.
  • r/slavelabour or r/forhire (more national/global, but often for online micro-tasks).

⚠️ Downside: Trust/safety can be a big issue; no built-in vetting or ratings.

X (Formerly Twitter)

  • Less common for errands, but people will tweet asking for recommendations for local movers, delivery help, or taskers (especially if they have strong local networks).

⚠️ Downside: Trust/safety can be a big issue; no built-in vetting or ratings.

Gopher (That’s us!)

  • Services Offered – Requests can be made for any service, any time, and anywhere.
  • Transparency – Real worker ratings, reviews and previous job history viewable before selecting a worker.
  • Affordable – Neighbors set their price or ask for a bid; no back and forth or price haggling.
  • Trustworthy – Gopher Pros are background check verified and customers can add the Gopher TrustShield ID verification for worker peace of mind as well.
  • Consistency – Features available to add “Favorite” workers to your list for future requests.

⚠️ Downside: Not available in all markets, occasional bugs with the new technology.

While we get to work on exterminating the bugs, please spread the word. With your help, Gopher will thrive in your community in no time!
